China warned the United States against “smearing its reputation” by accusing it of cyber-hacking.
Beijing’s reaction comes after the U.S. Justice Department and FBI announced the seizure of web domains that have been used by a Chinese state-sponsored hacking group known as “QTFY” and hacking platforms “QScan” and “QTRouter.” They said that victims of QTFY intrusions included NASA, the Federal Reserve, the U.S. Senate, and the departments of Energy, Justice, and Health and Human Services.
“China expresses strong dissatisfaction with and firm opposition to the U.S. side’s repeated wrongful practice of smearing China under the pretext of cybersecurity concerns,” spokesman Lin Jian said, calling the allegations “false information.”
The incident comes amid rising concerns over AI models’ growing ability to identify security vulnerabilities. This week, Chinese lab Z.ai is preparing to release another “open-weight” AI model, which allows users to access and modify it how they want. Last month, an unreleased, powerful OpenAI model went rogue and demonstrated remarkable hacking abilities.
The dispute highlights the growing strategic importance of cyber operations as U.S.–China competition expands into critical infrastructure, government networks, and artificial intelligence. Beijing’s rejection of the accusations is unlikely to end the confrontation. Instead, the key issues to watch are whether Washington releases additional technical evidence, whether it decides to sanction or indict further individuals and entities, and whether Beijing responds with its own countermeasures. If integrated with state-sponsored cyber operations, the development of increasingly capable AI hacking tools could significantly increase the scale and sophistication of future attacks. (EIR)
