A Moscow-led bloc is set to conduct military drills in Belarus between October 12–16.
The exercises would prepare the forces for a “peacekeeping” operation by the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), aiming to eliminate sources of biological threats, according to a Belarusian Defense Ministry official.
“The CSTO Joint Staff has approved scenarios of the Indestructible Brotherhood 2026 command and staff exercise with the CSTO peacekeeping forces and the Barrier 2026 special exercise with the CSTO joint formation of chemical, biological, radiation, and nuclear defense (CBRN), and medical support forces. These drills will be held at the Losvido training range on the territory of the Republic of Belarus on October 12–16,” Chief of the Belarusian Defense Ministry’s Department for International Military Cooperation Valery Revenko said on the X social media platform.

The announcement comes after this week the Ministry of Defense of Belarus shared photos of the Belarusian Special Forces contingent arriving at the Koktal training range in Kazakhstan, close to the border with China. The forces are taking part in the “Peak of Brotherhood” exercise between August 3–9. The publicly stated aims of the exercise are to practice planning and conducting of joint reconnaissance operations and to search for and eliminate illegal armed groups in mountainous and desert terrain. The Koktal training area is useful because it resembles environments where Kazakhstan and other Central Asian states are concerned about terrorism, militant infiltration, and cross-border armed groups.

The upcoming CSTO exercises in Belarus, alongside the ongoing drills in Kazakhstan, demonstrate continued military cooperation and interoperability among Russia-led CSTO members. While there is no public indication that the exercises are directed against a specific country, they reflect broader regional security priorities, including counterterrorism, instability in Central Asia, hybrid threats, and CBRN response capabilities. The drills also provide Moscow and its allies an opportunity to strengthen coordination, improve rapid-response readiness, and reinforce CSTO’s role as a regional security mechanism.
