China is expanding its presence in the waters east of Taiwan, raising fears that Beijing may be rehearsing a blockade strategy that would cut off the self-ruled island from outside trade and assistance.
Although China regularly patrols the Taiwan Strait, this marks the first time patrols moved east of Taiwan so rapidly. In response, Taiwan said it would carry out “anti-blockade operations” and deploy naval and coast guard ships to “conduct maritime law enforcement, sea area patrols, route safety protection, and escorts for critical supplies,” according to Major General Lu Wen-yuan, a defense ministry official involved in operations and planning.
Over the last two months, China conducted an increased number of patrols and “special maritime law enforcement operations”, as announced by its government. Beijing claims they are caused by discussions between Japan and the Philippines to set maritime boundaries, which would infringe on its “territorial sovereignty as well as its maritime rights and interests.” The latest development is likely part of pressure tactics which would damage morale among Taiwan’s population, in order to give in to China’s annexation goals.
Beijing’s reported push to extend its administrative claims into Taiwan’s eastern waters represents a shift from traditional pressure along the Taiwan Strait toward a broader strategy of strategic encirclement. By further challenging Taiwan’s control and presence, China is attempting to normalize its jurisdictional claims while increasing psychological and operational pressure on Taipei. The move carries both legal and military implications, as it seeks to gradually reshape the regional status quo without requiring immediate escalation.
