Google and Nvidia projects are driving major new artificial intelligence infrastructure investments in Finland and Egypt, as U.S. technology companies expand their global footprint amid intensifying competition with China over AI technology and influence.
Google announced plans to invest approximately $15 billion in Finland—its largest single investment in Europe—with the investment including new data centers designed to support growing AI computing demand. Meanwhile, Egypt is planning its first large-scale AI data center, a $1 billion project using Nvidia technology.
“This is Google’s largest single investment in Europe and a testament to Finland’s leadership in responsibly building AI infrastructure,” the company said in a statement, adding that the investments included “clean energy projects.”
The investments come as Washington increasingly views the international expansion of American AI technology as strategically important in its competition with Beijing. The Egyptian project is particularly significant after Huawei reportedly sought to build a data center in the country, prompting Washington to promote an alternative involving U.S. companies. The announcements also coincide with U.S. accusations that Chinese AI laboratories have systematically sought to replicate capabilities developed by leading American models.
The investments show how the global AI race is evolving from a competition over models and chips into a contest over who builds and controls the computing infrastructure underpinning other countries’ digital economies. Google’s Finland expansion strengthens the U.S.-linked AI ecosystem inside Europe, while Egypt could prove more geopolitically consequential as Washington and Beijing compete for AI influence across the Middle East and Africa, regions where digital infrastructure partnerships could shape technological dependencies for decades.
