France officially handed over its last military bases in Senegal today, marking a historic end to its 65-year military presence in the West African country. The French army’s exit comes as jihadists ramp up attacks in Mali, Senegal, Burkina Faso, and Niger across the Sahel region.
After gaining independence in 1960, Senegal has hosted French military bases as one of France’s strongest allies in West Africa.
Bringing the three-month departure process to an end, the remaining 350 French soldiers left Senegal today. They were tasked with conducting joint operations with Senegalese forces since March.
The French army had started reducing its presence in Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, and Gabon towards the end of 2022. In Gabon, a French base was converted into a joint camp that is primarily focused on training. (Agencies)
