The U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates on Wednesday for the first time since 2023, despite President Donald Trump’s calls for cuts.

The Fed unanimously raised rates by 25 basis points to as high as 4 percent, with Fed Chair Kevin Warsh stressing the need to combat inflation.

“The plain fact is that inflation is too high, and has been for too long,” Warsh said, adding that the decision was “serious” but necessary.

Wednesday’s rate hike may not be the last, with most Fed policymakers indicating that at least one more increase will probably be necessary before the end of 2026. U.S. households and businesses have been hit by years of higher-than-target inflation, while price pressures have intensified amid Trump’s war with Iran, his tariff policies, and the ongoing AI investment boom. The U.S. president called the Fed’s decision a “raise against Trump” and labeled the rate-setting committee “hostile” and politically motivated.

The Fed’s decision adds another economic complication for Trump less than two months before the midterm elections, when control of Congress will determine the political environment for the final two years of his presidency. Higher rates could keep borrowing costs elevated for households and businesses even as voters contend with inflation driven partly by tariffs and energy pressures linked to the Iran war, while the Fed’s projection of further tightening suggests those pressures may not disappear quickly. The decision also highlights the limits of presidential control over monetary policy: despite Trump’s public demands for lower rates, the Fed unanimously chose to tighten policy, demonstrating its willingness to act independently of White House pressure.

Internationally, tighter U.S. monetary policy can strengthen the dollar and increase financing pressures abroad, particularly for economies and companies dependent on dollar-denominated borrowing; the dollar strengthened following Wednesday’s decision. More broadly, the rate hike illustrates how the consequences of geopolitical conflict are feeding back into U.S. domestic politics: energy disruptions associated with the Iran war are contributing to inflationary pressures that have prompted a monetary response capable of affecting American growth, global financial conditions, and the political debate immediately before the midterms.
