Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday called for allies to send more anti-ballistic missiles after Russia launched 74 missiles and 284 drones at his country overnight, killing eight.
“This Russian terror once again proves that protection against the Russian missile threat is the most important,” Zelensky said, adding Ukraine faced a “critical shortage of air defense missiles from our partners”.
Russian strikes killed at least eight people and wounded more than a dozen others across Ukraine, authorities said, after Zelensky warned of Moscow launching another massive attack overnight.
A ballistic missile struck a village house near the central city of Kryvyi, killing four adults and two girls, aged five and 12, local officials said. Officials in Ukraine’s eastern Poltava region, meanwhile, said one person was killed in a drone strike on a warehouse. Similarly, Kyiv’s city military administration confirmed one person was killed.
“The Russians prepared a massive attack several days ago, and there is a high probability that the strike will be carried out tonight,” Zelensky said in a post on X late Wednesday.
Zelensky in his post repeated his request to Ukraine’s allies to supply Kyiv with the missiles its air defense system lacks.
European Council President Antonio Costa on Thursday condemned Russia’s “heavy” overnight airstrikes on Ukraine and the “violation of Polish airspace.”
He said on X, “Last night, Russia launched a massive combined strike against Ukraine. During the attack, Polish airspace was also violated, underlining once again that Russia’s aggression is a threat to the security of Europe as a whole.” (AFP)
