The UAE said a fire broke out in an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra region following a drone attack. No injuries were reported.
The Abu Dhabi Media Office stated on X, “The competent authorities in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi dealt with a fire that broke out in an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra region, caused by a drone attack. No injuries were reported.”
The statement did not say who was responsible for the drone attack. “All precautionary measures have been taken, and further updates will be provided as they become available.”
It clarified that there was no impact on radiation safety levels. “The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation confirmed that the fire did not affect the safety of the plant or the readiness of its core systems, and that all stations are operating as usual.”
The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant is the first peaceful nuclear energy project in the Arab world. It is located in the Al Dhafra region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The plant consists of four advanced nuclear reactors that together produce up to 25% of the UAE’s electricity needs.
Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it is following the situation closely and is in constant contact with the UAE authorities, ready to provide assistance if needed.
It added the IAEA has been informed by the UAE that radiation levels at the Barakah NPP remain normal. (EIR)
