Donald Trump has announced an “economic D-day” for Iran, saying any countries that provides “any type of lifeline” to Tehran will face “tremendous economic consequences.”

The U.S. President said Iran will face “the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country.” In response, Iran has slammed Trump’s economic pressure plan as more “failed policies.”

“No one has given the Islamic Republic of Iran a greater opportunity to make a Deal than me. TRAGICALLY, for them, they have failed to take it. Therefore, today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY! This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social Platform.

“ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences. Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies — It all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are. This will be an ECONOMIC D-DAY, and we need all of our Allies to stand with the United States of America to isolate, and defeat, the Iran threat,” he added.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi hit back at Trump on Thursday, saying his economic punishment plan for Tehran is a continuation of “failed policies”, which he said would bring Washington “further defeat”.

The so-called ‘Economic D-Day’ is a diversion from America’s own crisis: unprecedented debt & surging interest costs, he added in a post on X.

Trump’s announcement comes as U.S. gross national debt has surged past $40 trillion for the first time, with war in the Middle East driving investor worries.

Trump’s announcement signals an attempt to move beyond isolating Iran itself and impose potentially severe costs on third countries, companies, and financial institutions that keep Tehran connected to global trade. If enforced broadly, the strategy could force U.S. allies and major Iranian trading partners to choose between economic ties with Tehran and access to the U.S. financial system, while potentially disrupting oil flows and increasing sanctions-evasion activity. The key indicators to watch are which countries and institutions Washington targets first, whether major Iranian partners comply, and whether the campaign forces Tehran toward negotiations or instead triggers further economic and military escalation.
