Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips announced her resignation from Keir Starmer’s cabinet amid the ensuing crisis following Labour’s defeat in the local elections and mounting pressure on the Prime Minister to resign.

In a letter to Starmer, Phillips said, “I want a Labour government to work, and I will strive, as I always have, for its success and popularity, but I’m not seeing the change I think I, and the country, expect, and so I cannot continue to serve as a minister under the current leadership.”

In the letter made public by political editor Beth Righby, she added, “The desire to avoid arguments means we rarely make them, leaving opportunities for progress stalled and delayed…Politics is as much about feelings as policy, especially at the moment.”

Meanwhile, British media outlets reported a government statement later on Tuesday said: “Keir said at the Cabinet meeting that he would not discuss the election or his leadership,” and after the meeting, “he refused to meet with Cabinet ministers.”

With this resignation, the number of ministers who have resigned from Starmer’s government has risen to two as 80 Labour MPs call on the prime minister to step down. (EIR)
