The leader of the hard-right, anti-immigration Reform UK party Nigel Farage called for general elections to be held after Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation on Monday.
“Reform demands an election, and we are ready to deliver radical change,” said Farage, whose party has topped the opinion polls for months and delivered a resounding blow to Starmer’s center-left Labour in May’s local elections.
Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised Starmer after he announced his resignation, stating that during his tenure he had contributed to strengthening the security of Europe and Ukraine, which has been facing Russian aggression for years.
Von der Leyen wrote on X, “It can take many leaders years to grow into the statesman you became in just two years. European and Ukrainian security is stronger because of you. Thank you, dear Keir.”
With Starmer’s departure, Britain will get its seventh prime minister in a single decade, an unprecedented rate of change in its modern history. (AFP)
