An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that contradictory US positions constituted the main hurdle in the ongoing negotiations with Washington. He accused the United States of violating the ceasefire by attacking Iranian ships and affirmed that Tehran would retaliate against any attacks targeting it.
In an interview with an American news network, the spokesman added that the situation is “very volatile and dangerous,” attributing this to what he described as the “reckless US approach to the region and, primarily, to the ceasefire.”
According to the media report, he asserted that Washington is violating the ceasefire by attacking Iranian vessels, emphasizing that Iran will respond to any further attacks.
He also called on the United States to lift sanctions imposed on Iran, stating that Washington should release frozen Iranian assets and make them available to the Iranian people.
Despite signs of progress in the US-Iranian negotiations, the renewed attacks in the Gulf region, including Iran’s strikes on targets in Kuwait and Bahrain on Saturday, threaten to undermine the ceasefire declared on April 8.
Weeks of indirect talks marked by tit-for-tat threats and sporadic exchanges of fire have failed to secure a deal to end the conflict or reopen the vital waterway, a chokepoint for Gulf oil and gas shipments. (EIR)
