Greece is set to buy a $3 billion Israeli air and missile defense system designed to counter missiles, aircraft, and drones.

The plans for the “Achilles Shield,” a multi-layered defense system rather than a simple anti-missile battery, were revealed by a Greek defense ministry source.

The purchase is part of a $4.8 billion defense spending package, which includes C-390 Millennium transport aircraft, Heron unmanned aerial vehicles, Apache helicopter missiles, Victa stealth watercraft, and frigate sonar systems.

Greece’s move reflects lessons from recent wars about the growing importance of layered defense. The discovery of an explosive-laden naval drone in the Ionian Sea in May reinforced concerns about emerging maritime threats as well. The unmanned vessel, suspected to be of Ukrainian origin, was found in a cave near Lefkada on Greece’s western coast. The incident has had a significant impact on the Mediterranean country, raising questions about its vulnerability to emerging military technology.

Greece has increased investment in defense technology under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, including French ships and warplanes, as well as U.S. fighter jets.

The investment reflects Greece’s plan to increase defense spending from two percent to more than three percent of GDP and forms part of a broader shift in European defense. Across the continent, states are rapidly investing in layered air defense and counter-drone capabilities as drones become a defining feature of modern warfare.
