Russia struck Ukraine’s Kyiv region with ballistic missiles on Monday, killing at least eight people and wounding dozens, authorities said, after the foes traded overnight strikes on the eve of a NATO summit in Turkey.

Russia conducted a “massive” attack on Ukraine’s capital of Kyiv and other ‌locations using long-range, high-precision ‌air-, land-, sea-launched weapons and drones, the Russian Defense Ministry said ‌in a Telegram post.

The assault was the second on Kyiv and its surroundings in less than a week and came as both sides increased long-range attacks, underlining the growing reach of the war more than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

Meanwhile, Russia’s military said on Monday that it had shot down 519 Ukrainian drones overnight, a barrage that came as Moscow strikes on the Kyiv region killed at least 11 people.

The city of Sevastopol, on the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula, was left without electricity following a Ukrainian attack on energy infrastructure, announced Mikhail Razvozhayev, the local governor appointed by Moscow.

This comes as US President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky are expected to discuss the war on the sidelines of the summit in the Turkish capital Ankara, which begins Tuesday. Negotiations to end the conflict remain at an impasse.

Meanwhile, Zelensky called on US and European partners for “strong decisions” at the NATO summit to support Ukrainian air defenses.

“As long as Patriot missiles remain in our allies’ stockpiles, Russia is only encouraged to keep ‘vanquishing’ residential buildings. The United States and Europe have enough strength to stop this terror,” he wrote on X on Monday.

European NATO members, along with Canada, are also expected to announce a new €70 billion military aid package for Ukraine for 2026 and 2027, while fighting continues on the eastern front, amid conflicting accounts of control over the city of Kostyantynivka in the Donetsk region. (AFP/EIR)
