Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Iran agreed with Oman to share revenues collected from traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
The announcement comes after U.S. President Donald Trump warned last week that he would bomb Oman if it “gets in the way of a deal on Hormuz between the United States and Iran.”
“During negotiations with Oman, some agreements were made regarding the share of each country in the waters of the Strait and the share of Iran and Oman in its revenues,” said Guards spokesman Hossein Mohebi on Wednesday, adding that the U.S. was “obstructing work” to finalize a deal.
In recent weeks, officials from Oman have been discussing the future control of the strait and maritime navigation with Iran. Iran announced last week that the two sides were working on a joint declaration.
The reported agreement points to a potentially significant effort by Iran and Oman to coordinate on the economic and maritime management of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy shipments. The arrangement also adds a new layer to tensions with Washington as the United States seeks greater control over navigation and transit through the waterway. (AFP)
