Iran Reveals Washington's Conditions for Resuming Negotiations
Share:

Iranian media outlets on Sunday disclosed the conditions forwarded by the United States and Iran to resume negotiations between the two sides as tensions linked to the war persist in the region.

According to the Iranian Fars News Agency, the US outlined five conditions in response to an Iranian proposal. They include no payment or compensation or damages of any kind to Iran, the handover of 400 kilograms of enriched uranium by Iran to the US, and Iran keeping only one Iranian nuclear facility active.

The American conditions also included not releasing 25% of Iran’s frozen assets and holding negotiations to halt the war on all fronts.

The report indicated that the threat of “American and Israeli aggression” would remain even if Tehran were to comply with these demands.

Iran, for its part, has set five preconditions for building trust to enter negotiations. Iran’s pre-conditions include ending the war on all fronts, particularly in Lebanon; lifting the sanctions imposed on it, and releasing frozen Iranian assets.

Tehran has also demanded compensation for war damages and recognition of its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, Iranian media reported on Sunday that Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of the Iranian Parliament and Iran’s chief negotiator, has been appointed special envoy for China.

The Tasnim news agency, citing informed sources, reported that Ghalibaf was appointed as Iran’s special envoy for China affairs, as did other media outlets.

According to the agency, Ghalibaf’s appointment was recommended by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and approved by Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

Local media said Ali Larijani, the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, who was killed in an airstrike on March 17, assumed the responsibility before. Larijani oversaw the negotiations with China, which culminated in a 25-year cooperation agreement in 2021.

Since the outbreak of war on February 28 with US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran, Ghalibaf has emerged as a pivotal figure leading the Iranian delegation in the only round of talks held with the United States in April, following the assassination of several top Iranian officials, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
