The Russian Defense Ministry announced Sunday morning that its air defense systems destroyed 556 Ukrainian drones overnight, in what it described as one of the largest attacks since the war began more than four years ago.
The ministry said in a statement that air defenses intercepted the drones between 10:00pm and 7:00am over 15 Russian regions, as well as the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, according to Russian media reports.
Russian authorities confirmed that three people were killed and 16 others injured by the drones crashing in and around Moscow.
In Sevastopol, Crimea, a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack caused power outages in various parts of the city.
Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov said on Telegram that a woman was killed in the town of Khimki, northwest of Moscow, and two men were killed in a village in the Michi municipality, northeast of the capital. He added that four other people were injured and that homes and infrastructure were damaged.
Ukraine has been launching repeated strikes inside Russian territory in response to the daily shelling it has endured for over four years, asserting that it is targeting military sites and energy facilities to reduce Moscow’s ability to finance its military operations.
Last week, a temporary three-day ceasefire went into effect to coincide with Russia’s commemoration of the end of World War II and the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany. (EIR)
