US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Iran will be prevented from developing a nuclear weapon, considering it “only a matter of time” given the escalating pressure on the country.
In media statements, he said that the Iranian economy “will collapse” under the weight of the pressure resulting from the blockade of its ports, noting that Iran is experiencing increasing isolation that is depriving it of its primary sources of income.
He added that this conflict “will be resolved without haste,” emphasizing that the United States is not rushing to finalize the Iranian issue.
He indicated that US pressure has significantly weakened Iranian leadership and military capabilities.
Disclosing direct contacts with Iranian officials, he said, “We are not in a hurry to reach an agreement.”
Meanwhile, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth confirmed that his country has a plan to escalate against Iran if necessary, along with a backup plan for de-escalation. He indicated that the next steps would not be disclosed due to the sensitivity of the mission undertaken by President Trump and to ensure that Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapon.
He said that his country is “winning in Iran” and has made progress on all aspects of the conflict, adding that the Iranians are aware of this, which is what is driving them to express a desire to return to the negotiating table.
He clarified that the ceasefire agreement with Iran remains in effect and that any settlement of the Iranian issue will be in line with US terms and as decided by President Trump.
He added that the Department of Defense possesses sufficient ammunition and capabilities to secure its objectives, emphasizing that it is ready to act at any time if required.
He pointed out that what he called “Project Freedom” can be resumed whenever the president decides to do so, stressing that the nuclear issue is at the heart of the negotiations with Iran. (EIR)
