A “serious incident” at a military base in western Canada killed and injured multiple people and sparked a huge blaze on Saturday, the government said.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on X that “a serious incident creating a major fire” had occurred at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright military base in western Alberta province.
There were “both fatalities and injuries” as a result of the incident, the country’s defense minister, David McGuinty, said at a news conference. Neither offered details on number of casualties or the nature of the incident.
“We will have more to say in the coming hours and days,” McGuinty added.
Wainwright base, located in Alberta, is one of the Canadian Armed Forces’ premier training centers, hosting military exercises to prepare soldiers for combat operations. The base houses the Canadian Army’s Maneuver Training Center, which conducts exercises simulating combat conditions, as well as a training center for the 3rd Canadian Division.
Incidents occurring within Canadian military installations are subject to investigations that may involve the military police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, depending on the nature of the incident.
In the Wainwright incident, authorities have not yet announced the cause of the fire or the number of dead and injured, confirming that investigations are ongoing and that federal authorities, the Alberta government, and local agencies are coordinating to address the incident. (AFP + EIR)
