Moldova’s parliament has approved Vasile Tofan as prime minister, continuing Moldova’s pro-EU course.

“Our program is called ‘The European Economy, an Effective State’. This is the commitment we will work towards, and it is by this commitment that we ask to be judged,” Tofan said in parliament.

Tofan was backed by President Maia Sandu, who said Moldova needed a united government to reach EU membership. The new prime minister vowed to push forward the membership process, develop the economy, and privatize state-owned firms.

Tofan wants to achieve an accession agreement by the end of 2028 and be ready to join the EU bloc by 2030.

The move would build on the 2024 referendum in Moldova, in which a razor-thin majority of 50.38 percent of voters backed making EU accession a constitutional objective.

Since gaining independence in 1991, Moldova has alternated between parties favoring European integration and closer ties with Russia, but the war in Ukraine has strengthened support for EU accession. (EIR)
