EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Sunday that “political violence has no place in a democracy” following a shooting at a Washington media dinner attended by US President Donald Trump.

Kallas said she was “relieved” there were no casualties but added in a post on X, “Political violence has no place in a democracy. An event meant to honor a free press should never become a scene of fear.”

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was “shocked” by the shooting and that it was “a huge relief” that President Trump and others attending were safe.

“Any attack on democratic institutions or on the freedom of the press must be condemned in the strongest possible terms,” the British leader said on X.

The shooting late Saturday came less than 48 hours before King Charles III arrives in Washington for a state visit. (AFP)
