Britain announced Tuesday that it would deploy RAF Typhoon fighter jets to help defend Saudi Arabia against escalating Houthi attacks, a move closely aligned with military assistance previously advocated by former British Defense Secretary Sir Grant Shapps in an exclusive interview with Eagle Intelligence Reports.

The UK Ministry of Defence said the aircraft would conduct defensive missions to protect Saudi cities and critical infrastructure from drones and missiles, without launching offensive strikes against the Houthis. Britain will also provide an RAF A400M transport aircraft, military advisers, and additional logistical support, building on existing air defense deployments and refueling assistance.

“RAF Typhoons will fly defensive air missions to help protect Saudi airspace from drones and missiles,” British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting said, citing continuing Houthi attacks, including the targeting of Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport.

In a previous interview with Eagle Intelligence Reports, Shapps argued that Britain should extend its existing regional military assistance to Saudi Arabia, specifically through fighter jets and Reaper drones, while ruling out ground forces. “I see no reason not to offer or extend that assistance to Saudi as well in the sky,” he said. His remarks drew on Britain’s previous role alongside the United States in protecting Red Sea shipping from Houthi attacks. The new deployment reflects a similar emphasis on air defense and regional security cooperation, although it does not establish any connection between Shapps’ recommendations and the government’s decision. The announcement also highlights the growing importance of Saudi air defense as Houthi attacks threaten civilian infrastructure, regional stability, and energy security.

The deployment expands Britain’s direct defensive military role in Saudi Arabia and raises questions about how far London is prepared to extend its regional commitments. The immediate test will be whether RAF operations strengthen Saudi defenses without drawing Britain into a broader confrontation with the Houthis. Further escalation, particularly attacks against British aircraft or personnel, could increase pressure on London to reconsider the limits of its mission. (EIR)
