He is a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute and previously held senior roles at the U.S. Institute of Peace, the American Foreign Policy Council, and the U.S. Army War College. He has authored or edited 15 books and holds a Ph.D. in Russian History from the University of Chicago.

In retrospect, the Trump-Xi summit in Beijing increasingly appears to be a lost opportunity for the U.S. This is not because there were few concrete achievements or deliverables from this summit.
