Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization on Sunday said the United States attacked an under-construction nuclear power plant in the country’s southwest, as tensions between Tehran and Washington escalate.
US forces “in an aggressive and brutal act contrary to international law, attacked the under-construction Darkhovin nuclear power plant… with a number of projectiles on Sunday,” the organization said in a statement carried by state TV.
In a related development, a Jordanian military source stated that air defense systems intercepted and shot down three out of four Iranian missiles targeting the Kingdom’s territory, while the fourth missile landed in a remote area in the south of the Kingdom, far from populated areas.
The source indicated that the incident resulted in no casualties or material damage, confirming that Royal Engineering Corps teams began securing the missile impact site as per established technical and security procedures.
The source emphasized that the Jordanian Armed Forces continue to monitor the Kingdom’s airspace at the highest level of readiness and will deal firmly with any threat targeting the Kingdom’s security and the safety of its citizens.
Earlier, Jordanian authorities denied that they had ordered the evacuation of the airport and seaport in the coastal city of Aqaba, after the US embassy in Amman said they had been evacuated over a threat.
Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani said that “authorities have not issued any decisions to evacuate Aqaba Airport or the seaport, and both are operating normally”, adding that no “potential threats” had been detected.
The US embassy in Amman said Sunday that Jordanian authorities evacuated the airport and the seaport in the coastal city of Aqaba, citing a threat that was not immediately specified.
“Due to a specific and credible threat, Jordanian authorities evacuated the international airport and seaport in Aqaba. We strongly advise all Americans to refrain traveling to either the airport or seaport,” the embassy said in a statement. (AFP/EIR)
