Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on Tuesday that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) represents a historic achievement for all Africans and will not harm either Egypt or Sudan. His remarks came during the official inauguration of the GERD, Africa’s largest hydroelectric project, which is set to provide millions of Ethiopians with electricity, amid a worsening dispute with downstream Egypt that has heightened regional tensions. Ethiopia, Africa’s second most populous nation with 120 million people, regards the $5 billion dam, built on a tributary of the Nile, as a cornerstone of its economic development strategy.
