Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Major General Mykhailo Drapaty as the new commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s army following several days of street protests, marking the biggest change in military leadership since the start of the war with Russia.

Drapaty is a highly respected veteran commander who led the ground forces from 2014 to 2015 and is considered one of the new generation of generals. Drapaty, 43, replaces Oleksandr Syrsky, 60.

Zelensky’s cabinet reshuffle last week saw the dismissal of the reformist, tech-focused Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, 35, after serving just six months in office. The removal raised concerns that Ukraine may be losing the momentum it recently gained on the battlefield.

Ukraine is seeking to regain the initiative in the war by targeting Russia’s energy sector, a major source of Moscow’s revenue, as well as its supply lines and logistical operations.

While introducing Drapaty, Zelensky said, “The operations of the Ukrainian Defense Forces are continuing, and must continue steadily.” (AFP/EIR)
