United States President Donald Trump has promised to make a “very big announcement” in a primetime address on Thursday night.
He refused to reveal to journalists what the news was, saying only that he will talk about elections and “a couple of other things.”
But according to sources cited by CBS news, Trump will claim that China interfered in the 2020 U.S. presidential elections, despite American intelligence assessments to the contrary.
Administration officials said he will talk about newly declassified intelligence on the 2020 elections, as well as cyber vulnerabilities in voting machines that could allow foreign interference. It comes after Trump repeatedly claimed he had been a victim of voter fraud in his election defeat, despite various investigations to the contrary.
The speech is likely part of Trump’s push for the Senate to pass the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship for voter registration. Critics say Trump’s actions will lower voter confidence in the next elections and influence election administration. More than 57 percent of American voters disapprove of Trump’s second-term actions, according to YouGov.
The U.S. president’s speech will take place at the White House on Thursday at 9 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time (01:00 GMT Friday).
