Republicans in the US Senate sought to pass President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax-cut and spending bill today, despite divisions within the party over the expected $3.3 trillion impact on the national debt.
Senators participated in a marathon session known as a “vote-a-rama,” voting on a series of amendments proposed by Republicans and the Democratic minority. The Congressional Budget Office released its cost estimate for the bill, which will raise the total US debt to $36.2 trillion.
The Senate version is estimated to cost about $3.3 trillion, an increase of $800 billion over the version passed last month in the House of Representatives.
