Iranians took to the streets in new protests against the clerical authorities overnight despite an internet shutdown as President Donald Trump said Saturday the United States is “ready to help” as protesters in Iran faced an intensifying crackdown by authorities of the Islamic republic.

Rights groups warned on Sunday that authorities were committing a “massacre” to quell the demonstrations.

The protests, initially sparked by anger over the rising cost of living, have now become a movement against the theocratic regime that has ruled Iran since the 1979 revolution and have already lasted two weeks.

“Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!!” Trump said in a social post on Truth Social, without elaborating.

His comments come a day after he said that Iran was in “big trouble” and again warned that he could order military strikes. (AFP)
