Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday vowed to resolve their border disputes and enhance cooperation, saying that “the border issue should not define the overall China-India relationship”, ahead of a regional summit in Tianjin.

This is Modi’s first visit to China since relations between the two countries deteriorated following deadly border clashes between Chinese and Indian soldiers in 2020. According to the Associated Press, Modi said that relations with China have moved “in a meaningful direction,” adding that “there is a peaceful environment on the border after the disengagement.”

Meanwhile, Xi hoped that the Tianjin meeting would “contribute to further elevation” and “promote the sustainable, healthy, and stable development of bilateral relations.”
