Iran said on Monday that the conditions set by the United States in indirect talks were “excessive,” as President Trump’s recently set deadline for reaching an agreement approaches.
“We have not held direct negotiations with the United States so far,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei. “We have received messages through intermediaries regarding the United States’ desire to hold talks.”
Baghaei added that the meetings held in Pakistan were between the countries involved in the mediation, and Iran has not participated in them. “It is good that the countries of the region want to end the war, but they should pay attention to the party that started it.”
He continued, “Iran’s position is clear, unlike the other side, which constantly changes its position. Iran knows very well the framework we want, and what was conveyed to us were excessive and unreasonable demands.”
Meanwhile, Iran announced that it is not seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, but indicated that the parliament is currently considering the possibility of withdrawing from the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
