The Syrian foreign minister held direct talks with an Israeli delegation in Paris following a US-brokered meeting as part of a diplomatic effort to normalize relations, despite the recent tensions between the two sides. According to Syria’s official news agency (SANA), Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani met with Israeli officials to discuss de-escalating tensions and reinstating the 1974 ceasefire agreement. The agreement had established a demilitarized buffer zone between Israel and Syria and deployed a United Nations peacekeeping force to maintain calm.

The statement did not provide details about the outcomes of the Paris meeting. However, a senior official in the Trump administration, who was not authorized to comment publicly, confirmed that the talks took place. “The United States continues to support any efforts that will bring lasting stability and peace between Israel and its neighbors,” the official told The Associated Press, adding that the backing follows President Donald Trump’s outlined “vision of a prosperous Middle East” that includes a “stable Syria at peace with itself and its neighbors, including Israel.” “We want to do everything we can to help achieve that,” the official added.
