Syria and Russia have agreed to review all past agreements between the two countries. The agreement was announced following a meeting in Moscow on Thursday between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.

During the meeting, Al-Shibani described the current phase as both challenging and full of opportunity for Syria, stating, “We are going through a difficult period, and there are tremendous opportunities for Syria. We hope that Russia will stand by our side.” He emphasized the Syrian government’s intent to rebuild foreign relations based on mutual respect and called for Russia’s full and sincere cooperation in supporting Syria’s transitional path.

Touching on domestic concerns, al-Shibani affirmed that the protection of the Druze community is a sovereign responsibility of the Syrian state, and he urged Israel not to interfere in internal Syrian affairs or exploit the issue of minorities. “We do not harbor hostile intent toward Israel,” he said, “but its repeated attacks on Syria only serve to fuel further violence.”

Lavrov reiterated Russia’s support for inclusive governance that ensures participation from all communities, as well as for Syria’s unity and territorial integrity. He reaffirmed Moscow’s rejection of Western sanctions on Syria and called for their immediate lifting. “We have agreed to review past agreements,” Lavrov said, adding that both sides are aligned in rejecting the use of Syrian territory for geopolitical rivalries or the settling of international scores.
