France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, and Andorra have recognized the State of Palestine at the United Nations in a bid to increase pressure on Israel to end the war in Gaza. The step is described as historic but largely symbolic.
“France today recognizes a State of Palestine,” Macron told the UN summit as the Palestinian delegation led an ovation, saying he was supporting “peace between the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.”
Israel and the United States condemned the recognitions. Similar measures have recently been taken by Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said President Donald Trump views the recognition as “a reward for Hamas.”
